I am sending a picture of my grandfather’s headstone in Belle Plaine, Kansas cemetery. Michael J. Markel was born in York County, Pennsylvania on October 17, 1848 and died July 27, 1928.
He and a friend both being 17 years (which was too young to join the regular army) of age, went to Washington where they were employed as teamsters, situations they could eaily fill because of their experience upon the farm. They next entered the army in 1864 as substitutes (volunteers). They were paid $600 each to substitute for two men who chose not to go to war.
They were present at the siege of Petersburg, VA., the evacuation of Rchmond, VA. and Lee’s surrender April 9, 1865.
Following the war the two purchased tracks of land with the $600 received for serving as substitutes. They married, had families, and several years after their discharges from the service visited each other discussing the various battles in which they both took part.

Thanks,
Mary "Betty" Wyckoff

Sgt. William H. Bradley (contributed by Bradley Herrington)

William H. Bradley was born March 30, 1841, and died March 16, 1917.  He is buried in Hillview Cemetery, in Hempfield Township (Greensburg),
Westmoreland County, PA, near the University of Pittsburgh's Greensburg
campus, in Section B of the cemetery.

After his military discharge in 1865, he married Martha I. Gibson (of Butler County PA) on July 18, 1867, in the presence of Robert M. Gibson and James A. Bradley (my great great great grandfather?), ceremony performed by the Rev. W. H. Tibbles.  Marriage records indicate William was from Elizabeth PA.  They had 11 children between 1868 and 1889. The last of their children died in 1970.

Sgt. William H. Bradley, Martha I. Gibson Bradley and their first-born son
(Charles W. Bradley, my great grandfather), are buried in the same 4-grave plot in Greensburg.  Martha and Charles have no stones at this time, so I assume the military or the veterans erected the white stone for William.

(author's note: per Bradley Herrington family records, the John W. Bradley listed as Sergeant of Co. M in the Bates' Roster is incorrect)
