Websmith's Note: The following 62 letters were typed and submitted to the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania, Pittburgh, PA by John Alexander Adams, grandson of Alexander Adams.  The letters were submitted in the early 1960s and are primary source material on the 100th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry Regiment, "The Roundheads". There are numerous letters and commentary related to the letters in the regimental history, "Campaigning with the Roundheads", by William G. Gavin, 1989, Morningside Publishers.  The only corrections to the typed letters are spelling errors that were caught later and handwritten into the typed copies.  All other text is as transcribed in the 1960s by Adams' grandson John.

The following letters were written by Alexander Adams to his mother, mostly during his service in the Union Army in the Civil War.  He was 16 1/2 years old when he wrote the first letter and not yet 20 when he wrote the last.

The above picture was taken at Falmouth, VA., in January 1863, shortly after the Battle of Fredericksburg.

JOHN ALEXANDER ADAMS,

His Grandson
